What makes a smart watch so expensive?

smart watch

When people talk about a smart watch, they are at either of two ends of the spectrum. There are either the watches that cost a lot of money, usually containing watches from companies like Apple, Samsung, or Motorola, which near to or around six figures in rupees, or there are the watches on the more ‘affordable’ end, that cost fewer than ten thousand rupees or somewhere around that value.

While there is a lot of content online talking about the ‘best smart watch’ that is at the top of the list, there is little to no discussion about smart watch prices, and how expensive they are at the upper end. So we decided to make an article discussing what makes a smart watch either affordable or expensive.

What makes an affordable smart watch?

As we stated earlier, the smart watch price in Pakistan varies quite a bit from somewhere near the beginning of five figures, all the way up to going into six figures in rupees. A lot of factors go into creating that price difference, usually to do with what the watch has and what it does not, with the general rule that the more money that you spend, the more/better that you get.

Build

Let’s start with build quality. The top-tier watches all very prominently showcase the metals that they used in the construction of their watches, whether that be some sort of aluminum material or stainless steel. These provide the watch with a level of durability that means that they will last you for 5 to 10 years at least. On the other hand, if you were to open a list of the top 5 smart watches under 5000, you’ll find that every single one of those has plastic construction, which means that you should thank lady luck if it lasts you more than 2 or 3 years.

OS

Second comes the software. Every single smart watch manufacturer at the top has a state-of-the-art purpose-built operating system that they use for their watches, which of course cost a lot of money to make. On the other hand, The OS in most cheap watches is usually some variation of extremely basic cookie-cutter operation systems that are slow and buggy, other than the rare exception.

 Features

The third big thing here is the features that the watch will provide you. While someone like Apple provides you with a combination of excellent health features and everyday communication features, a cheap watch will hardly be able to do any one of the two particularly well. Take any cheap fitness-focused smartwatch to your liking, and compare it with something like an amazfit watch for example and the difference is night and day.

Conclusion

What we’ve established is that cheap watches tend to be much lower quality than the expensive stuff, so does that mean you should never buy them? Not really. A good idea would be to buy a cheap watch, and then start saving up to buy the more expensive stuff so that you get the full set of benefits of the smart watch life.
